NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns Discussing Potential Trade for DeMarcus Cousins

Every time you think Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins is starting to settle, rumors begin to fly again.

The Kings are just as bad as usual this year, but because of the lack of depth in the Western Conference, the team has a real shot at Cousins’ first playoff appearance. On top of that, the Kings are able to offer the former Kentucky big man a contract worth $200 million this summer due to the new collective bargaining agreement.

Yet still, the trade rumors are swirling with a new report that the Phoenix Suns are engaged with Sacramento in trade negotiations involving Cousins. The possible deal was reported by

The Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings have had discussions about a trade involving All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.”

“Gambadoro reports the discussions have centered around involving small forward T.J. Warren, center Alex Len, Phoenix’s first-round pick this year and possibly more. The Suns own all of their future picks and also own two future Miami Heat first-round picks from the Goran Dragic deal.”

It isn’t totally clear why the Kings would be interested in this deal. Yes, the Suns’ first round draft pick has a legitimate chance of being first overall right now, but if Cousins is playing in Phoenix for the rest of the year, that’s much less likely to be the case.

There isn’t really an asset in that group that has a good chance to ever be more valuable than Cousins. Maybe if the Suns were thinking of including second-year guard Devin Booker along with their first-round pick and center Alex Len, it would be a conversation.

Perhaps this is a sign that the Kings are ready to move on from Cousins, and the front office has gotten tired of sitting around and waiting for the perfect deal. If the Boston Celtics aren’t interested in going all in for him, a better deal isn’t necessarily on the market for the controversial big man. If the deal goes through, a core of guards Booker and Eric Bledsoe and Cousins could be interesting going forward.
