Pau Gasol, who yesterday informed the Chicago Bulls that he would not exercise his option for next year, is receiving a great deal of interest from the San Antonio Spurs, according to NBC Sports.

The Spurs, who have built through the draft for years, made a major splash in last summer’s free agency by signing former Portland Trail Blazers star Lamarcus Aldridge. This move paid off and led to the Spurs setting a franchise record for wins. However, the season ended in a second round playoff exit at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Now, the Spurs look to the free agency market again for their next step. Gasol made the All-Star team during both of his years in Chicago and put up impressive scoring numbers. But his defensive shortcomings are real. This, however, could be covered by the Spurs historically great defense, and two-time Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard.
Is this a sign that the Spurs don’t expect Tim Duncan to return next year? Possibly. But the Spurs were lacking a big man in their rotation last year, and there is a chance Gasol could coexist with Duncan and Aldridge.
