NBA News: Gordon Hayward to Miss Extended Time With Finger Injury

- in News, Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz have major expectations entering the new season for the first time in several years. After a quick rebuild by a savvy front office, the Jazz are ready to be a Western Conference playoff team on the back of their stingy defense and efficient offense.

With today’s news of Gordon Hayward’s finger injury, those expectations just became a little harder to meet.

13 regular season games doesn’t seem like a lot, but missing your best offensive player for almost a sixth of the season is a tough break for a young team trying to break into the playoffs. And that also doesn’t account for the time that Hayward will need to adjust once he comes back.

The Jazz will still have their greatest strength — their defense — but they will have to get some lucky offensive breaks, and some strong play from offseason acquisition Joe Johnson, in order to stay afloat.

The only positive result that could come here is some offensive development for the Jazz’s younger players, and some tempered expectations. A lot of people are currently expecting the Jazz to get homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs, and possibly even win more than 50 games. It is a lot for a young team that has never done anything before, and it stands as an even taller task now.
